Mengtian lab module for China’s space station delivered to Hainan launch site
The module will soon be installed on the launch vehicle and undergo pre-launch checks
BEIJING, August 9. /TASS/. Chinese specialists have delivered the Mengtian laboratory module, which will soon become part of China's orbital station, to the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on Hainan Island. The China Manned Space Program Office said Tuesday.
Chinese scientists and engineers "provided an unprecedented range of work" during the construction of Mengtian, the statement said. The module will soon be installed on the launch vehicle and undergo a pre-launch check.
Equipment at the launch pad is in good condition and is being tested according to schedule, the department said.
Mengtian is China's second space station research module and will be used mainly for microgravity materials science and hydrophysics projects. The first the Wentian laboratory cabin module, designed primarily for biological experiments, was sent into orbit on July 24.
Mengtian is expected to be launched in October.
The Chinese station is at an altitude of about 400 kilometers and will serve more than 10 years. It is designed for three people (up to six for a short time during crew changes). The mass of the T-shaped complex, which has three docking units and an airlock for getting into space, is 66 tons, the volume of compartments reaches 110 cubic meters. The orbital facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2022 and, as the Chinese authorities say, will be available for international projects.
