Hainan opens world's first commercial deep sea data storage center
The Ocean Data Warehouse is located in Changjiang Li Autonomous County (western part of the island)
HAIKOU, May 26. /TASS/. Hainan Provincial Department of Industry and Information teamed up with two Chinese investor companies to open the world's first commercial deep ocean data storage center, reported the Hainan Daily.
According to the newspaper, the repository will consist of 100 spacious compartments, which are planned to be put into operation during the fourteenth five-year plan (2021-2025). Currently, preparations are underway for the start of operation of only five of them. The total amount of information that the storage can contain is not indicated.
"With the development of next-generation 5G and 6G mobile communications, data traffic will grow extremely rapidly. This hub will meet the needs of further development," said Xu Tan, vice president of Beijing-based technology partner company Highlander.
As the organizers of the project specified, the scope of application of smart technologies on Hainan will gradually expand. As a result, according to them, there is a need to increase the scale of cooperation, including with the involvement of neighboring countries.
The Ocean Data Warehouse is located in Changjiang Li Autonomous County (western part of the island) near the Hainan nuclear power plant. "The project is characterized by low depreciation [of equipment], it implies low costs. We should also mention such advantages as reliability and safety," Xu Tan clarified.
She recalled that Hainan's free trade port policy attracts many companies, and therefore the number of interested market players will constantly increase. "In such a situation, it is extremely important to ensure order and security of data. I hope that in connection with the development of Hainan's rich oceanic resource base, this center will be of national and even international importance," concluded the vice president of Highlander.
