Scientists at Belgorod State University have developed new drugs for the treatment of periodontal diseases — their composition is unique

February 11. /TASS/. Scientists from Belgorod have developed new drugs with a unique composition of natural ingredients for the treatment of periodontal diseases - the tissues surrounding the tooth, the press service of Belgorod State University told TASS on Thursday.

"Scientists at Belgorod State University have developed new drugs for the treatment of periodontal diseases, their composition is unique in a way that only natural ingredients are used - apple pectin and juniper oil. Due to the addition of juniper essential oil, the medicine has an increased antimicrobial effect," the press service said.

Two versions of model gel mixtures, developed according to one of the projects of the scientific and educational center, during the research showed higher efficiency in comparison with the imported analogue widely used in Russia. As noted in the press service of the university, according to statistics, periodontal diseases are detected in 98.5% of the examined patients, however, there is a shortage of domestically produced drugs for the treatment of such diseases on the Russian pharmaceutical market.

“In order to confirm the antimicrobial effect of essential oil of juniper, we conducted additional experiments. As a result, no growth of microorganisms was recorded in a model mixture with juniper oil without artificial preservatives after 35 days,” added Elena Zhilyakova, head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology at the Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biology of the university.

The national project "Science" was developed in accordance with Vladimir Putin's  May 2018 decree. According to the objectives of the national project, Russia should become one of the five leading countries carrying out research and development in areas determined by the priorities of scientific and technological goals.
