Rosatom’s scientists invent new ozone-based disinfection device
According to the inventors, the disinfection method surpasses "hard" ultraviolet radiation or use of chlorine
MOSCOW, April 7. /TASS/. The Troitsk Institute for Innovation and Fusion Research (a Rosatom subsidiary) specialists have come up with a system for sterilizing and disinfecting medical tools, attire, equipment and facilities with mobile concentrated ozone production systems, Rosatom announced Tuesday.
A group of scientists, led by Alexander Basiyev, invented a way to produce ozone with a concentration of up to 0.7 gram per liter at a rate of 6 kilograms per hour. The production occurs in a mobile system of a size, comparable to that of a home air purifier. The device is rather easy to use. The system is put into a box with medical equipment, and, in 15 minutes, all surfaces will be disinfected.
These mobile ozonizers can disinfect almost any medical room with area of up to 100 square meters. According to the inventors, this disinfection method surpasses "hard" ultraviolet radiation or use of chlorine.
"Currently, most rooms are being disinfected with chlorine, which is toxic, whereas ozoning is a clean technology, which, if used properly, has no negative effects. Our systems make it possible to sterilize medical attire without using high temperatures, which prolongs its lifetime," says Stanislav Kosarev, the project’s curator.
The new system’s key advantages are a high concentration of ozone produced, a high rate of disinfection and sterilization, the device’s compact size and mobility, and its low cost of operation. The new ozone maker is expected to need half as much energy as existing analogs.
The new ozonizers are slated for tests under real conditions, which will reveal the device’s effectiveness and applicability for medical purposes.
