Three suspected militants killed in shootout with police in Dagestan

Overnight to Monday, police officers tried to stop a vehicle for a check, but unknown assailants riding in the car opened fire, which injured a police officer

MAKHACHKALA, August 24. /TASS/. Three suspected militants have been killed in a shootout with police near Makhachkala, the capital of Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a law enforcement source said.

The source said one policeman was injured.

Overnight to Monday, police officers tried to stop a vehicle for a check, but unknown assailants riding in the car opened fire, which injured a police officer.

"The three men inside the car were killed by return fire," the source said.

The developments occurred in the village of Novy Khushet, where a counterterrorism operation regime was imposed on Sunday.

Russia’s law enforcement agencies continue fighting militants in the North Caucasus over 14 years since the battle phase of the second war against Islamist separatists in Chechnya came to an end in 2000. Attacks on security officials and civilians occur from time to time in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
