Russia’s Supreme Court mitigates sentence to one of journalist Politkovskaya case convicts
The investigators failed to prove that 3 out of 5 convicts had been involved in the transfer of weapons, on this basis the punishment to one of them was mitigated from 14 years in prison to 13,5 years
MOSCOW, June 26. /TASS/. Russia's Supreme Court has mitigated on Friday the punishment to one of the convicts in the case of the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, a TASS correspondent reports.
According to the judicial board, the investigators failed to prove that convicts Jabrail Makhmudov, Lom-Ali Gaitukaev and Rustam Makhmudov had been involved in the transfer of weapons. On this basis the punishment to Jabrail Makhmudov was mitigated from 14 years in prison to 13,5 years. The court ruling didn’t affect the sentences of other people convicted for the crime.
The Moscow City Court jury earlier pleaded guilty five defendants in the case. The Supreme Court, after checking the circumstances of the case, found no grounds for cancelling the sentence, after which it entered into force.
Anna Politkovskaya was murdered on October 7, 2006, at the entrance to her apartment building.
