Russian foreign ministry: Aggressive rhetoric will not ease tension over Falkland Islands
Earlier this week, Britain’s Secretary of State for Defense Michael Fallon declared the British government’s plans to boost the security of the Falkland Islands
MOSCOW, April 2. /TASS/. Aggressive rhetoric will not help ease tension over the disputed Falkland Islands, the only way to settle the dispute between Argentina and Great Britain peacefully is direct dialogue, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday, commenting on a recent statement by Britain’s defense minister.
"No one questions the right of the British leadership to act proceeding from its own assessment of the situation around the islands. But the use of openly aggressive public oratory can hardly promote de-escalation of tensions and obviously will not help built up trust between the parties concerned," he said.
The Russian diplomat noted that on the backdrop of the unfolding canvassing campaign in Great Britain some representative of the coalition government were seeking to score additional points by loud statements on sensitive issues of the international agenda.
Earlier this week, Britain’s Secretary of State for Defense Michael Fallon declared the British government’s plans to boost the security of the Falkland Islands. The minister’s statement came after Argentina said it was looking at a number of weapons supplies deals. "The threat remains. It is a very live threat. We have to respond to it," Fallon said.
