Russia providing real aid to Ukrainian refugees — UN representative
The United Nations is making every effort to provide a glimpse of reality to the refugees’ situation in Russia, the UNHCR's representative said
ROSTOV-ON-DON, December 15. /TASS/. The world seems to be reluctant to understand that Russia is providing real assistance to refugees, fleeing the military action in eastern Ukraine, a representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Russia, Baisa Vak-Voya said on Monday.
“Refugees are in safe hands. The world does not understand many things or does not want to understand. You should not exaggerate, you need to just to show everything just as it is,” said Vak-Voya, who is currently on a working visit to the Rostov region, in southern Russia.
The United Nations is making every effort to provide a glimpse of reality to the refugees’ situation in Russia, the UNHCR's representative said. Russia is bearing huge costs for accommodating the refugees, he stressed.
Currently, the Rostov region hosts some 38,658 Ukrainian refugees, including around 11,500 children.
Kiev’s military operation designed to regain control over the breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk regions in Ukraine’s south-east on the border with Russia, which call themselves the Donetsk and Luhansk People's republics, has killed over 4,600 and forced hundreds of thousands to flee.
