Total of 14 policemen dead after Thursday’s antiterrorist operation in Chechnya

It was earlier reported that 10 militants were neutralized as a result of the operation in Grozny

MOSCOW, December 5. /TASS/. A total of fourteen policemen died in Chechnya’s capital Grozny on Thursday during a major antiterrorist operation, the press center of the Russian Interior Ministry told TASS.

“The (posthumous) nomination of the policemen for state awards is being considered now,” it said.

Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev told a meeting of the ministry’s board on Thursday that the policemen displayed high professionalism, courage and heroism and died while performing their professional duties.

The family of each policeman will receive a million rubles (over $18 thousand) at the instruction of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

Terrorist attack on Grozny

At about 01:00 a.m. Moscow Time Thursday (22:00 UTC Wednesday) a group of unknown assailants driving three cars attacked a traffic police checkpoint in Grozny. Then militants penetrated the Press House where republican newspapers, web publications and offices of federal media are based, and a school.

Law enforcers blocked the buildings, and a counterterrorism operation was launched in downtown Grozny. Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) told TASS Thursday that 10 militants were neutralized as a result of the operation in Grozny.
