According to Rosatom CEO, the nuclear power industry should be beyond political situation

MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom is ready to resume cooperation with the US once the US expresses such wish, CEO Sergey Kiriyenko said on Firday.

“All our contracts are in force. The nuclear power industry should be beyond political situation,” he said.

Russia and the US earlier discussed projects in the nuclear sector, but now the conversation has stalled, Kiriyenko said.

“If our partners get ready to continue the discussion, we will be glad. If not, then not,” he said.

The inter-governmental agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy was signed in Vienna by Rosatom Head Sergey Kiriyenko and US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz in September 2013.

Under the agreement the two countries were supposed to join efforts in developing new nuclear power technologies, ensuring safe handling of nuclear waste and non-energy use of nuclear technologies, including for medical purposes.

Western economical sanctions imposed against Russia did not affect Russia’s investments in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), an international project to create an experimental thermonuclear reactor based on tokamak, a company official said earlier. The reactor is now expected to be created by 2020. Besides Russia, participants of the €15 billion project also include the EU, India, China, South Korea, the US and Japan.
