UNHCR delegation arrives in Rostov region
The visit is expected to result in a report to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
ROSTOV-ON-DON, September 29. /ITAR-TASS/. A delegation from the Russian office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has arrived in the south Russian Rostov region, which has provided accommodation for tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine.
The delegation of three members arrived on Sunday and will stay in the region till October 1, a regional government official said on Monday. They will visit temporary accommodation centers and meet with regional leaders and Federal Migration Service and Foreign Ministry officials, the source said.
It is a routine trip to visit refugees and to receive information from the regional authorities about problems they have to accommodate people and how many people have arrived, the UNHCR representative in Russia, Baisa Vak-Voya, told reporters.
The visit is expected to result in a report to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, he said, adding the information will be accessible for the international community.
When refugees appeared in Russia, the international community doubted the people really were refugees. But at present, the international community has no doubts. The data on the number of refugees is received from the Federal Migration Service, and there are no grounds not to believe it, the UN official said.
The United Nations Organization does not plan to provide aid for Ukrainian residents accommodated in Russia, as the Russian government said it can cope with it, he added.
The Rostov region has 48,000 Ukrainian refugees now, according to the local government’s data.
