Jose Manuel Barroso has received a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin on the consequences of implementation of the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union

BRUSSELS, September 26. /ITAR-TASS/. President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso has received a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin on the consequences of implementation of the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union and promises not to delay the answer, the EC spokeswoman, Pia Ahrenkilde-Hansen said on Friday.

President Barroso is in Ottawa representing the EU at the EU-Canada summit so he cannot take up the issue promptly, Hansen said.

When asked about the association and trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine, the EC spokeswoman replied that Brussels and Kiev were working hard on implementing it.

Hansen said that the association agreement was a bilateral document so it could be revised only by one side with the obligatory consent from the other. So the EC did not insist on any amendments and Ukraine as an independent country had a sovereign choice in the issues of foreign relations, she said.

Kremlin confirmed that Putin had sent letters to Russia’s European partners writing about possible aftermaths of the Ukraine-EU association agreement implementation,

“As regards the letters, I can say that these letters on possible consequences of the EU-Ukraine association agreement, which was signed and later ratified by both sides, were sent to leaders of certain countries, including Ukraine and the European Commission,” the presidential aide, Yuri Ushakov told reporters commenting on media reports about Putin’s letter to Barroso.
