New airport opens on South Kurils’ Iturup Island

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, September 22. /ITAR-TASS/. A new international airport opened in the South Kurils’ Iturup Island on Monday.

The new airport is situation on the Sea of Okhotsk shore of the Iturup Island. It will serve flights to Sakhalin, as well as to Khabarovsk, Vladivostok and Japan. This is the first airport in Russia, which has been constructed from the “zero” level since the times of the Soviet Union.

The island has another airport, Burevestnik, which exists since the Japanese times. The airport is located at the Pacific Ocean’s side, and due to often fogs and snow storms flights are delayed there all the time.
