MOSCOW, September 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Senior government representatives from Russia and Georgia discussed on Thursday recent resumption of regular air links between the two countries, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The Georgian prime minister’s special representative for relations with Russia, Zurab Abashidze, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin, considered “practical issues connected with the resumption of flights on the Moscow-Tbilisi-Moscow route”, the ministry said.

Regular air traffic between Russia and Georgia was back to normal on September 15 first time since its suspension in August 2008 following Georgia’s attack on the self-proclaimed republic of South Ossetia and Russia’s peacemaking intervention.

In 2010, Georgian flag carrier Airzena Georgian Airways launched its first charter flights between Tbilisi and Moscow. Until just recently only two air carriers - Russia’s Sibir (S7) and Georgian Airways - had performed occasional charter flights between the two capitals.

Abashidze and Karasin agreed to meet for talks in Prague in the middle of October to discuss bilateral relations between Russia and Georgia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier discussions between Abashidze and Karasin opened near Geneva in December 2012, first between official representatives since hostilities over the bordering South Ossetia region flared in 2008. The next four meetings were held in Prague in March, June, September and November 2013.

Abashidze said the new encounter in the Czech capital would focus on “issues of further development of Georgian-Russian co-operation in trade, the economy and transport”.
