MURMANSK, September 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Submarines of Russia’s Northern Fleet have successfully performed a simulation attack with torpedoes on warships as part of a naval exercise underway in the Barents Sea, the fleet’s official spokesman, Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga told Itar-Tass.

Naval units also did combat firing with cruise missiles.

“Under the scenario of the exercise, the submarine crews were to attack surface ships from submerged position,” Capt Serga said. The detachment of ships consisted of the battleship Admiral Ushakov, the big antisubmarine ship Severomorsk, and the small antisubmarine ships Shnezhnogorsk and Yunga.

Preliminary assessments of the exercise suggest that the nuclear submarine Nizhny Novgorod and the diesel-electric powered submarine Lipetsk coped with the task perfectly well - each crew launched four torpedoes at the ships.

All in all, more than fifteen warships and submarines took part in the Northern Fleet’s war games, which also involved units positioned on the shore and naval aviation, Capt Serga said.

Commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Vladimir Korolyov said separate episodes of the war games like missile strikes at surface targets were likely to earn prizes of the Navy’s Commander in Chief.
