MOSCOW, September 15. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian MP Leonid Levin, who is deputy head of the Duma Committee on information politics, does not think that Russia should ban Euronews television on its territory despite a scandalous episode staged in Ukraine - a violent act against a portrait of Vladimir Putin demonstrated by Euronews.

"Russia should not tread in Ukraine's footsteps that bans and blocks Russian TV channels. I do not think that we should go as far as banning Euronews television in Russia," Levin told ITAR-TASS on Monday.

Earlier, MP Mikhail Markelov had demanded to open a criminal case and ban broadcasts of Euronews television in Russia after Euronews demonstrated a scandalous scene featuring Ukrainian law enforcers firing shots at a portrait of the Russian president.

Nonetheless, Levin said that banning Euronews television in Russia is "inexpedient from a political point of view". "The very fact of banning the main television channel of United Europe will not help resume the relations between Russia and the European Union," Leonid Levin said.

But, Levin said that he agreed with his Duma colleague, saying that the footage of the scandalous incident by Euronews television in an episode that deals with the Ukrainian conflict " promotes neither truce between people nor truce in the informational conflict."

"The fact of the scandalous scene run on Euronews should be given assessment by the Prosecutor's General and the Federal Supervision Service for Communications (Roskomnadzor), that should check it for compliance with Russian law," the MP said. "If the fact of the violation is proved corresponding bodies in Russia shall decide what measure of punishment the act deserves - a fine or a reprimand," Levin said.
