Putin hopes SCO expansion to take shape next year

The president said important documents, regulating the process of getting SCO member state status are to be adopted on Friday

DUSHANBE, September 12. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian President said on Friday he hoped the Shanghai Co-operation Organization’s (SCO) expansion process will take real shape next year.

“Taking the rotating presidency rights, we hope the SCO expansion process next year will take real shape. We will assist this process in every possible way,” Putin said at a meeting of the SCO Council of the Heads of State.

The president said important documents, regulating the process of getting SCO member state status are to be adopted on Friday, which will complete the process of the formation of the legal, administrative and financial conditions for the admission of new members in the organization.

Putin said Russia takes a diligent approach to the fulfillment of the SCO presiding state functions. The Russian presidency priorities include the strengthening of the organization’s role as an affective regional security mechanism, the launch of major bilateral economic projects, deepening of cultural and humanitarian relations. “We consider it important to develop the SCO relations with the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, expand co-operation with other international organizations, first of all the United Nations,” the president added.

Some 100 events at various levels are planned during Russia’s SCO presidency, the main of which will be the SCO member states’ summit in Ufa on July 9 - 10, 2015.
