Shanghai Cooperation Organization officials to discuss regional military situation

BEIJING, August 28. /ITAR-TASS/. Chiefs of the General Staffs of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will meet in Beijing on Thursday to discuss regional security after withdrawal of the international contingent from Afghanistan.

"The military delegations will exchanges their views about the military and political situation in the world and the region, as well as ensuring security in Afghanistan after the International Security Assistance Force completes its withdrawal," the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry told ITAR-TASS.

The parties will also discuss more intensive cooperation in the field of defence within the SCO framework, it added.

On Friday, the chiefs of the SCO General Staffs will monitor the final stage of joint anti-terrorist drill Peace Mission 2014. More than 1,000 Russian servicemen are taking part in the exercise. Russian military equipment includes tanks, armored vehicles, missile salvo systems, self-propelled artillery guns, four Su-25 attack aircraft, eight helicopters and two military transport planes.
