Russia’s armor producer to arrange for licensed production of tanks in Asia, Africa
ZHUKOVSKY, August 14. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s manufacturer of armored vehicles, Uralvagonzavod, has unveiled plans for licensed production of the T-90 main battle tank and upgrading armored vehicles on the T-72 platform in Asia and Africa.
“We have plans for working under the license in two more countries,” Uralvagonzavod chief Oleg Siyenko said on the sidelines of the Oboronexpo-2014 exhibition of military hardware in Zhukovsky, near Moscow, on Thursday. He avoided naming the two countries, merely adding that both were in Uralvagonzavod’s traditional partner regions - Asia and Africa.
“We are in the active phase. Plots of land have already been reserved there, the technical and technological features of such centers have been identified and preliminary design projects issued,” Siyenko said.
Siyenko said his company would be upgrading vehicles on the T-72 platform and running licensed production of T-90 tanks.
“As a rule, countries seek to have this process localized to the maximum extent. This is precisely the way we prefer to go about this business. We keep moving in this direction,” he said.
Earlier, Uralvagonzavod arranged for the production of the T-90 tank in India.
