MOSCOW, August 13, /ITAR-TASS/. Presidential Human Rights Council Head Mikhail Fedotov said on Wednesday he was hoping that Russian parliamentarians’ call for withdrawing from under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights would not be supported.

Earlier, several deputies said they intended to submit this proposal to the Russian president at a meeting in Crimea on August 14.

“I hope that this initiative will not be backed because Russia is a respectful member of the world community and of the Council of Europe. To say that we do not recognise the European Court of Human Rights would mean that we are withdrawing from the Council of Europe and denouncing the European Convention on Human Rights,” Fedotov told Itar-Tass.

“We want human rights to be respected in our country, not broken,” he said.
