Three Russian aircraft companies of the Russian United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Sukhoi, Tupolev and Myasishschev Experimental Design Bureau — have potential to create a hypersonic aircraft, UAC Director for military aviation programs Vladimir Mikhailov said on Tuesday.

Such a vehicle required considerable budget investments, he added.

“If the state as a customer is interested, we are ready to start research and design works. As for the brand, UAC companies Sukhoi, Tupolev and Experimental Design Bureau have some scientific and technical hypersonic developments from the Soviet times,” Mikhailov added.

However, speaking of creating hypersonic aircraft was premature, Mikhailov said as even in the US with the research underway for decades, it was only at the stage of technology demonstration by scramjet X-51A WaveRider.
