MOSCOW, July 28. /ITAR-TASS/. The West's geopolitical project for Ukraine stands no chance of success, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a briefing for journalists on Monday.

In line with agreement reached at talks in Geneva, Russia's way sought “to influence the situation in Ukraine to turn it from military confrontation to political talks in full accordance with obligations taken by the Russian Federation, the United States and Ukraine,” the minister said.

But, he noted, “whatever Russia has done to launch a political process, everything has been confronted with counteraction from Ukraine's leaders, who felt and feel support from the USA”.

“Some geopolitical project was formulated under a far-fetched pretext when the then president was denied time to analyze the agreement on association with the European Union,” Lavrov said, observing the aim of “occupying Ukrainian geopolitical space to the detriment of Russia and Russians in Ukraine”.

“It failed to be done at once and will fail since it is impossible to impose such things on one party,” he said.

|They promised to agree with it and begin an inclusive open dialogue. Instead, some commission was formed in Kiev to work out a draft constitution and later it was forwarded to the Venice Commission [an advisory body of the Council of Europe, comprising independent constitutional law experts].”

“I have no doubt the Venice Commission will say any draft constitution must be the subject of wide national dialogue,” Lavrov said.
