MOSCOW, July 15./ITAR-TASS/. Ten people died in a Moscow metro train derailment, Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov said. "The death toll is 10 people," he said. 

Another injured man was recovered from a destroyed Moscow metro train car, a source in Moscow law enforcement agencies told ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.

“He is alive, he will be taken to hospital by helicopter in heavy condition,” the source said.

It is not rule out that more people may be entrapped in this metro car, he said.

An incident occurred in the Moscow metro during the morning rush hours, as three metro train cars filled with passengers derailed in the underground tunnel. The metro incident took place at a section between metro stations Slavyansky Bulvar and Park Pobedy running under a governmental highway. 

 

More than 100 people injured

One hundred-and-six people have been hospitalized, while 50 of them are in a serious condition. As many as 149 people sought medical aid, Biryukov said. 

“At the moment,out of 120 people injured in the Moscow metro train incident, 106 were taken to hospitals with different injuries. Around one hundred ambulances are working at the incident site, four emergency helicopters are airlifting the injured people to hospitals. The injured were taken to 14 Moscow hospitals, including city hospitals number 67 and 71 and Sklifosovsky First Aid Clinic,” the press service of the Health Ministry reported.

Several people were stuck for about an hour in an underground tunnel between metro stations Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bulvar, as a metro train car filled with passengers derailed on Moscow’s Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya blue metro line on Tuesday, eyewitnesses told ITAR-TASS.

 

Emergency services working at the site

Forty ambulance crews are working at the site of emergency near the blue-line Moscow metro station Park Pobedy, Moscow deputy mayor for social development Leonid Pechatnikov told ITAR-TASS. 

Spokesman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry Alexander Drobyshevsky said the ministry sent BK-117 three helicopters to the site to deliver those injured to the hospitals.

Sixty-six busses have been organized additionally to transport passengers from Kiyevskaya to Molodezhnaya metro stations of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line. It is recommended that people use other metro lines moving in the direction of Moscow region.

An emergency headquarters was set up at the Slavyansky Bulvar metro station. Police have cordoned off the neighboring area. Ambulance medics are giving first aid to passengers in the street.

 

What happened

First reports about the accident appeared around 9am on Tuesday. According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM), the train going from the city center stopped abruptly between the Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bulvar stations after a power surge. Three metro train cars derailed as a result of the incident. Metro train traffic has been halted on  the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya blue metro line, and its power supply is cut off.

According to preliminary reports, a sudden braking of the metro train caused the incident. Meanwhile, Russia's Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov arrived at the site, ITAR-TASS reported from the scene. The minister will be supervising an operation to eliminate the consequences of the accident.
