MOSCOW, June 25. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s Federation Council (upper house of parliament) has urged the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to condemn the Ukrainian authorities’ arbitrariness against Russian journalists.

In a resolution, adopted at Wednesday’s plenary session, the law-makers express “serious concern over the Ukrainian authorities’ continuing policy of repression against Russian news professionals”.

“Political censorship imposed by Ukraine’s current government has escalated into terror against foreign journalists. It has become a tendency to detain journalists by force, torture them and kill them,” the resolution says.

The Federation Council has conveyed deep outrage over the tragic killing of the public broadcaster VGTRK correspondents Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin near Ukraine’s eastern city of Lugansk on June 17.

“Politicians who came to power in Ukraine as a result of a military takeover are in panic over journalists' activity and they will go to any lengths in attempts to prevent news professionals who do not share the Ukrainian leadership’s views from doing their job properly,” the authors of the appeal to UNESCO say.

They also ask UNESCO to draw the attention of the International Organization of Journalists to numerous facts of violations of journalists’ rights in Ukraine.
