Moscow incensed by Latvia’s equating Communism, Nazism

MOSCOW, June 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Moscow is incensed by the text of a preamble to Latvia’s Constitution that puts an equation mark between Communism and the Nazi regime, Konstantin Dolgov, the special envoy of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of human rights, democracy and the supremacy of law said Friday.

“Quite obviously, this politically influenced document aims to instill the preferential positions of the titular nation over ethnic minorities in the state system and it will obviously work towards a further inter-ethnic split in society,” Dolgov said.

“Moscow cannot but be indignant over the overt equation of the Communist and Nazi regime, which the text of the preamble contains,” he said. “In essence, it pursues the goal of legitimizing the veterans of the Latvian volunteer legion of Waffen SS as the alleged fighters for independence.”

“Russia hopes the shameful situation, in which nationalistic forces using the reform of the Constitution in an EU member-state as disguise try to install discriminatory provisions, will get an appropriate assessment from the international and European agencies concerned,” Dolgov said.
