Flood damage recovery nears completion in south Siberia
NOVOGORSK, June 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Recovery work in south Siberia’s flood-hit regions will be over by the end of the week, Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said on Friday.
“By efforts of the regional authorities, services, agencies and the regional Emergencies Ministry center, we are planning to complete recovery operations in the Altai Territory by June 22,” Puchkov said, noting there is sufficient personnel and equipment.
More than 200 emergency response teams have been working there to pump out water, repair bridges and power transmission lines, clear farmsteads and deliver food and water to local residents.
Devastation was wreaked by excessive rainfall, when a month's precipitation was registered between May 27 and May 31.
More than 210 settlements in the republics of Altai, Tuva, Khakassia and Altai territory were inundated, and more than 36,000 people evacuated.
Conditions have stabilized in all regions except Altai, where some settlements remain partially flooded.
