Duma speaker demands punishment for embassy attackers, compensation for damage
The embassy came under violent attack on Saturday, June 14
MOSCOW, June 16. /ITAR-TASS/. The leader of Russia's lower house of parliament on Monday called for punishment for those responsible for storming Russia's embassy in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, also demanding full compensation for the damage.
State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin said the incident was “irresponsible and disgusting”. “We cannot calmly watch the activities of those who absolutely ignore rules of international law and simply fuel conflicts,” he told reporters, noting he was also “embarrassed by the fact that Ukrainian law enforcement agencies did nothing to stop the attack by radicals on the Russian diplomatic mission”.
“Moreover, there is an impression that these actions found support among official authorities,” he noted.
“We demand that the safety of the Russian embassy and its staff be ensured, that masterminds and participants in that action be punished and that the damage to Russia's embassy be fully compensated,” Naryshkin added.
The embassy came under violent attack on Saturday, June 14, with embassy cars overturned, the Russian flag torn down and the premises pelted with eggs, smoke barrels and firecrackers.
