TSKHINVAL, June 09. /ITAR-TASS/. At the parliamentary elections in South Ossetia the turnout was unexpectedly low, as most people had left for Russia and could not come back for the day, head of the Russian State Duma’s delegation of observers Makharbek Khadartsev said while commenting on the report by the republic’s Central Election Commission, which read that the turnout was only slightly above 51% Traditionally, about 90% of the electorate participate in elections in South Ossetia.

“I can explain the low turnout by the fact that many people have moved to Russia, and most of them simply could not participate in the elections,” he said. “However, everyone who did vote could enjoy good workflow, where any falsifying was impossible.”

The parliamentarian said the observers were satisfied with organisation of the elections.

“The situation was rather tense before the elections,” he said. “South Ossetia has chosen a correct democratic trend. I hope the parliament will be formed from the parties which will work for the benefit of the republic.”

On Sunday, South Ossetia had elections to the parliament of the sixth convocation. Representatives of nine political parties competed for 34 mandates. Over 90 foreign observers watched the elections.

Thus, after counting of 31.08% of votes, United Ossetia is scoring 44.11% of the vote. Second is the party People’s Unity with 16.43%, which is followed by the People’s Party (7.54%). Next are Unity (6.58%). New Ossetia (6.6%), Nykhas (6.21%), the Communist Party (4.91%), Fydybasta (4.73%), and the party Rodina (Motherland) (3.12%).

Final results of the voting will be announced within five days.
