Children of slain Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya demand $145,265 for moral damage

MOSCOW, May 21./ITAR-TASS/. The children of slain Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has demanded 5 million roubles ($145,265) in compensation for the moral damage.

Anna Stavitskaya, who represents the defendants in court, said that Politkovskaya’s children were going to sue each defendant for a million roubles ($29,053).

Last Tuesday, the majority of jurors passed a guilty verdict on the case recognizing all the five defendants to be guilty.

Prosecutors are going to ask the court for punishment for the culprits after discussing the consequences of the jury verdict. On the contrary, the defense laywers will be given a chance to argue in favor of a softer sentence.

The culprits include Lom-Ali Gaitukayev, his nephews Rustam, Ibragim and Dzhabrail Makhmudovs and Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. They were accused of murdering Anna Politkovskaya as part of an organized criminal group. Two were also charged with illegal arms trade. Rustam Makhmudov was also charged with kidnapping a person in Moscow in 1996 and money extortion. All the five defendants are under arrest.

Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, a former Moscow policeman who pleaded guilty of spying on Politkovskaya, is already serving an 11-year prison sentence.
