MOSCOW, April 28. /ITAR-TASS/. The latest developments in Ukraine highlight the urgent need for disarming militants from the far-right group Right Sector and for taking real steps towards constitutional reform in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday, April 28.

“Russia is seriously worried by the latest events in Ukraine,” the statement said.

On April 27, in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, law enforcement agencies took no action to prevent a mass fight that led to casualties. On the next day, Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes was attacked. He has been operated on and is now in critical condition. On the same day, an outrageous incident involving presidential candidate Mikhail Dobkin occurred in Kherson, southern Ukraine, during his canvassing trip.

“A group of armed persons, which is said to have included members of the Right Sector, Maidan (collective term for mass protests in Kiev’s Independence Square known as Maidan and subsequent events that brought hardliners to power) and Kherson’s self-defence forces blocked (Dobkin’s) plane on the runway. The presidential candidate had to leave Kherson without disembarking the plane or meeting his electorate. The incident in Kherson indicates that there is no question of ‘peaceful’ election campaign in Ukraine, as the Kiev authorities keep stating, or free expression of Ukrainian citizens’ will,” the ministry said.

“The current developments in Ukraine highlight the urgent need for disarming all armed groups, primarily militants from the Right Sector, and for starting real, not sham, work on constitutional reform in the Ukrainian state and the search for ethnic consensus,” the ministry said.
