Russia's Northern Fleet to have 40 new ships by 2020
By 2016, the amount of new equipment should reach 50%
MOSCOW, April 08. /ITAR-TASS/. Forty new ships and logistics vessels will be supplied to Russia's Northern Fleet by 2020, including six nuclear and conventional submarines, fleet commander Admiral Vladimir Korolyov said on Tuesday.
"It is planned to replenish the Northern Fleet with new vessels and upgrade those in service by 2020 as part of the state armaments program," Koroloyov told a conference at the Federation Council upper house of Russia's parliament. "By 2016, the amount of new equipment should reach 50%. By 2020, it has to rise to 85%."
"Over this period, defense firms will deliver to the Northern Fleet six multi-role nuclear and conventional submarines, two large landing vessels, a fleet destroyer, five frigates, five trawlers and 21 logistics vessels," the admiral said.
