MOSCOW, April 02. /ITAR-TASS/. Dagestan's Supreme Court has sentenced to 13 years an armed mutiny participant who was a member of gangs led by warlords Shamil Basayev and Khattab.

"Abdulla Abdulkerimov was found guilty under Article 279 of Russia's penal code (armed mutiny), Article 208 (participation in illegal paramilitary formation) and Article 222 (illegal turnover of weapons)," an Investigative Committee official told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

The investigator said Abdulkerimov was a member of illegal armed groups set up by Basayev and Khattab in 1996-1999, which invaded Dagestan's Botlikh district from Chechnya on August 7, 1999, to overthrow the authorities and establish an Islamic state.

Ninety servicemen and police were killed in the fights, and another 290 people were injured. Thousands of residents in the combat zone had to flee their homes.

"Abdulkerimov was hiding from Russian investigators for a long time. In 2004, he was detained and convicted in Azerbaijan for the crimes committed in that republic. He was extradited to Russia in 2012," the Investigative Committee said.

Abdulkerimov will serve his sentence in a maximum security prison.

According to Investigative Committee officials, more than 58 gunmen who participated in the invasion of Dagestan's Tsumada and Botlikh districts are on the wanted list.
