State Hermitage head concerned over future of Scythian gold from Kerch
The collection was taken from Kerch to exhibitions in European countries before Russia’s reunification with Crimea
ST PETERSBURG, March 25. /ITAR-TASS/. State Hermitage Museum director Mikhail Petrovsky has expressed concern over the future of Scythian gold treasures from Crimea’s Kerch museums that are touring over Europe.
The collection was taken from Kerch to exhibitions in European countries before Russia’s reunification with Crimea, he said, adding that the question emerged, “where this collection will return after the end of the tour - to Crimea, Ukraine or it will remain in Europe.”
Petrovsky says this is a serious problem in the cultural sphere.
Representatives of the State Hermitage Museum said the Russian museum had not participated in organizing that exhibition. However, the museum attaches great importance to Crimea’s archeological heritage, and its experts regularly take part in research expeditions to Crimea.
The State Hermitage Museum has its own unique collection of Scythian gold.
