Moscow expects more “exotic statements” in Kiev if the Ukrainian authorities rely on radicals, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the State Duma (lower house of Russian parliament) during the ratification of the reunification treaty with Crimea on Thursday, March 20.

“Apart from that one (on Ukraine’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States), other topics were also raised, including those on the introduction of visas (between Ukraine and Russia). One says they need to be introduced, another one says they don’t. And these are members of the same coalition. The visa regime was proposed by the top officials of the Ukrainian Security Service who represent the Svoboda (Freedom) party, with regard to which the European Parliament in 2012 adopted a special resolution that called it racist and anti-Semitic and warned all other political forces in Ukraine against cooperating with Svoboda or forming a coalition with it,” Lavrov said.

“(Batkivshchyna leader Arseniy) Yatsenyuk, (UDAR party leader Vitali) Klitschko and their parties did the opposite and formed a coalition with Svoboda. We can see every day on television what Svoboda representatives are actually like. It’s utter lawlessness,” the minister said.

“If the coalition relies on Svoboda as its force, with the support of the Right Sector, we are going to hear a lot of exotic statements like this,” he added.
