MOSCOW, March 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian Federal Customs Service has tightened control on the Russian-Ukrainian border to prevent smuggling of arms and other banned actions, the watchdog’s press service told Itar-Tass.

According to the press service’s representative, there were reports about possible transporting of banned objects, including arms, across the national border.

The official denied information that transportation of Ukrainian goods across the border to Russia was halted. He also said there was no 100% examination of all cargoes on the border. Only suspicious transport is being examined.

Earlier on Thursday, the Ukrainian Association of Road Carriers reported that Russia closed the border for Ukrainian goods overnight.

Meanwhile, as was reported on Thursday, the Federal Security Service had stopped contraband deliveries of arms from the European Union to Russia across Ukraine.

The FSS, in operations to detect and close channels of illegal delivery of firearms and firearm parts, discovered contraband supplies of arms from EU countries across Ukraine to Russia by means of motor transport, trains and postal operators.

When one of such international criminal groups was detected, the security service received information that a great number of guns were bought from a European Union country and delivered to Ukraine, while there was no proper control from law-enforcement authorities, and then transported in hiding places in vehicles to North Caucasian republics.

After receiving the information, FSS officers detained members of a criminal group, Ukrainians and Russians, at the international road checkpoint Donetsk-Izvarino in the Rostov Region.

Measures to block smuggling of weapons from abroad are continuing, the Federal Security Service said.
