Bank of Russia restores website after cyber attack
An analysis of the situation allowed concluding that the website was hit by a DDoS attack, the power of which exceeded the channel capacity more than ten times
MOSCOW, March 14. /ITAR-TASS/. Central Bank of Russia had restored the website work in full, after it was disrupted on March 14, the bank said on its website.
An analysis of the situation allowed concluding that the website was hit by a DDoS attack, the power of which exceeded the channel capacity more than ten times, it said.
A sharp traffic increase was recorded on the website at 09:30 Moscow time on March 14. There were problem in the access to the website between 09:45 and 11:00. Specialists of Bank of Russia together with providers restored the website functioning in full at 11:00.
As was reported earlier on Friday, the Kremlin’s official website and the website of Bank of Russia were attacked by hackers.
Specialists were doing all possible, and their efforts allowed making the website accessible almost for everyone, a Kremlin administration source said.
“Indeed, the case in hand is a major DDoS-attack aimed not only at the Kremlin's site, but also on some other web portals,” the press service told Itar-Tass, adding that this is the most powerful attempt to destabilize the resource’s operation.
“All measures are taken to fully restore the website’s performance,” the press service stated. “At present, the website is available for the majority of users.”
In addition, specialists worked on establishing the source of the cyber attack.
The Russian presidential administration did not link this Friday's attack on the president's official website with developments in Ukraine, a Kremlin source told Itar-Tass.
“Such spamming happens regularly, but to varying degrees of activity. It is not right to link it with developments in Ukraine,” the source noted.
The source said that “similar spamming mailings occur very often, but with different intensity.” “It is wrong to link them to the events in Ukraine,” the source noted.
The official websites of the Crimean Supreme Council and other authorities on the peninsula were also hit by cyber attacks on Friday, Crimean Minister of Information and Mass Communications Dmitry Polonsky said.
The parliament's website did no open in the past few hours. Websites of the republic's ministries also worked with serious problems, he said.
“It is true, massive DDoS attacks began on Friday. However, it did not affect activities of the bodies of power,” he said. The minister linked the cyber attacks with the upcoming Crimean referendum planned for March 16.
Specialists were working to restore the work of the portals, he said.
