Putin tells UN head Russia can’t stay aside if violence flares in Ukraine

MOSCOW, March 02, /ITAR-TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stating that if violent actions are taken against Russian speakers in eastern Ukrainian regions and Crimea Russia cannot stay aside and will take necessary measures according to international law, the Kremlin press service reported on Sunday.
Both sides noted that further escalation of the crisis in Ukraine should be averted.
