"It seems doubtful that a unitary state will be able to meet interests of all regions of independent Ukraine," lawmaker Leonid Slutsky noted

MOSCOW, February 28. /ITAR-TASS/. Federative or confederative structure most probably can ensure the realization of interests of all regions of Ukraine, head of the Russian State Duma committee for CIS affairs, Eurasian integration and ties with compatriots Leonid Slutsky told a parliamentary session on Friday.

“We should remember that this constitutional process (constitutional reform) as it had been fixed in the agreement of February 21 should meet interests not only of all political forces, but also of all territories and all regions of Ukraine,” he said.

“From this point of view it seems doubtful that a unitary state will be able to meet interests of all regions of independent Ukraine,” the parliamentarian said, “Most likely, it would be reasonable to think about federative, possibly, confederative structure of future Ukraine.”

“Federation or confederation will most probably be able to fulfill interests of future Ukraine’s regions, including eastern and southeastern regions and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea,” Slutsky said.
