MOSCOW, February 07. /ITAR-TASS/. Characteristics given to the Brest Hero-Fortress located in Brest, Belarus, by CNN “is cynical and shocking,” Konstantin Dolgov, Russian Foreign Ministry’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, said.

“It would be good for American journalists to revive in their memory decisions of the Nuremberg Trials,” the diplomat wrote in his Twitter blog on Friday. “We should not forget the Soviet people who gave their lives for the victory over the Nazis, our common enemy.”

In late January, CNN included the Brest Hero-Fortress in the list of the “world’s ugliest monuments.” The monument’s photography was accompanied by impolite comments. The list evoked indignation in Russia and Belarus.

On Thursday, CNN apologized for inclusion of the monument into this list, causing offence to Russia and Belarus.

Statement of Russian embassy in Washington

“This is a monument that symbolizes the courage of soldiers who were the first to resist the Nazis on the borders of our homeland, the memory about the millions of soldiers who fell in the battlefield to deliver the world from the brown plague,” the Russian embassy said in the statement. “This is a monument to the heroes whom we venerate.”

“Rankings of this kind are unacceptable from the angle of historic significance of monuments, as they insult the memory of those who died and defy human consciousness,” it said.
