MOSCOW, February 06. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia appealed to all parties in all armed conflicts to declare ‘an Olympic truce’.

"First of all, our appeal is addressed to all parties in a bloody conflict in Syria, which has serious destabilizing influence not only on the situation in that country, but also the region in general," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

“This step would meet fully U.N. General Assembly Resolution 68/9, which was adopted at Russia’s initiative on November 6, 2013. The resolution on promoting peace and building a happier life in the world through sports and fulfillment of Olympic ideals contains an appeal to all U.N. states to observe ‘an Olympic truce’ separately and jointly under the U.N. Charter. This resolution was approved in consensus, the number of its co-authors reached 121 countries,” the ministry noted.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that “declaring of ‘an Olympic truce’ has deep historical roots, which date back to the idea of Olympiads in ancient Greece, when any wars and conflicts were stopped for their period of time.” “Therefore, Russia’s appeal meets fully humanistic and generally civilized ideals of Olympic movement and aims at reviving this tradition,” the ministry said in the statement.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has made an appeal to ‘an Olympic truce’ to all countries.

President of the Socialist International George Papandreou has put forth the same initiative to declare a truce and ceasefire before and during the Winter Olympics in the southern Russian city of Sochi by all parties to the armed conflict in Syria.

“The international peace conference on Syria launched on January 22 and following inter-Syrian talks in Geneva with a U.N. mediating role matches the logics of seeking political and diplomatic settlement in Syria,” the Russian diplomatic agency noted.

“Conclusion of ‘Olympic truce’ by all parties to armed conflicts in the world should pave way for stopping bloodshed, sufferings of civilians and launch of political process to overcome crises under the principles laid out in the U.N. Charter,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
