Moscow court to begin trial of opposition activists
On Tuesday, the court is expected to hear the parties' petitions and set the date for the hearing on the merits
MOSCOW, February 04. /ITAR-TASS/. Moscow City Court on Tuesday will hold a preliminary hearing of the case against Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov and Leonid Razvozzhayev, an aide to a State Duma deputy, accused of planning riots across Russia.
Proceedings were opened against Udaltsov and Leonid Razvozzhayev after a TV film entitled ‘Anatomy of Protest’ showed a meeting between Russian opposition leaders and Georgian politician Givi Targamadze.
On Tuesday, the court is expected to hear the parties' petitions and set the date for the hearing on the merits.
The Left Front leader has been under house arrest, and Leonid Razvozzhayev has been in custody. Both denied wrongdoing.
Police detained them after the riot on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square on May 6, 2012, when the opposition's action, initially sanctioned by the authorities, escalated to clashes with police. Law-enforcement personnel detained more than 400 people. More than 30 police officers were hurt and several dozen people were injured. The riot-related damage exceeded 28 million rubles.
Maria Baronova, Alexandra Dukhanina, Vladimir Akimenkov, Stepan Zimin, Sergei Krivov, Alexei Polikhovich, Denis Lutskevich, Nikolai Kavkazsky, Leonid Kovyazin, Artyom Savelov, Yaroslav Belousov and Andrei Barabanov were charged with participation in mass riots. After the amnesty marking the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution in December 2013, the charges were dropped against Baronova, Kavkazsky, Akimenkov and Kovyazin.
Maxim Luzyanin, Konstantin Lebedev and Mikhail Kosenko were convicted for participation in the May 6, 2012 riot. The cases against Udaltsov and Razvozzhayev were investigated separately.
