VOLGOGRAD, January 12, 13:48 /ITAR-TASS/. A statue of a girl with the flower fell down at the World War Two memorial called “Soldier’s Field” in Gorodishche District of southern Russia’s Volgograd region.

The police were informed that the statue fell to the ground somehow and is lying at the pedestal, press officer of the regional police department Olga Nikiforova told Itar-Tass on Sunday. “On the same day the statue was taken for required criminalistic expertises. The police are checking whether it was an act of vandalism,” Nikiforova noted.

After the end of the Battle of Stalingrad local residents named this field of 400 hectares in space as “Soldier’s Field”. The field was literally stuffed with lethal metal. Only by autumn 1975 the sappers have completed the demining in the locality, defusing more than 6,500 shells, mines and other ammunition.

The war memorial “Soldier’s Field”, which sculptors Levin and Krivolapov had created, was unveiled near the Volgograd-Moscow highway on September 20, 1975.

A funeral urn of perished soldiers, remains of which were found in the demining of the field, is buried in the common grave. A hole in the ground filled with pieces of mines, shells, grenades picked up on the field is situated in the centre of the memorial. A statue of a girl with the flower in the hand was standing nearby. The statue was made of plaster and was covered with bronze. A marble triangle of ‘a letter from the soldier’ is placed at the statue. The letters of Soviet servicemen from the war fronts used to have a form of triangle.
