64 wounded people are being treated at hospitals

MOSCOW, December 31. /ITAR-TASS/. Fatalities of two terrorist attacks staged at a railway station in southern Russia’s city of Volgograd on Sunday and a trolleybus on Monday rose to 34, and 64 wounded people are being treated at hospitals, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets said on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, the number of fatalities is growing. Two terrorist attacks killed 34 people,” Golodets stated. Forty-nine wounded people receive medical treatment at hospitals in Volgograd, 15 wounded people were taken to the hospitals in Moscow, she noted.

The deputy prime minister has also set the task to the country’s Health Ministry to decide on the delivery of wounded people within the next day, if the latter need medical aid in Moscow.

The doctors also try to stabilize the health of the three-month-old girl, who was wounded in a terrorist attack staged in a trolleybus in the city of Volgograd, in order to airlift her to Moscow, a source in the hospital said.

“The child is estimated to be in an extremely grave condition. Her health is alarming,” the source said. In his view, the little girl cannot be airlifted yet. “As long as her health stabilizes, the child will be airlifted for further treatment in Moscow accompanied by a brigade of qualified medics,” the hospital source noted.

Six people wounded in the first suicide bombing in Volgograd are estimated to be in an extremely grave and heavy condition, the regional health ministry said.

Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova stated about the absence of deficit of medicines and blood at the Volgograd hospitals, where wounded people had been taken after two terrorist attacks.

Senior Sergeant of Police Dmitry Makovkin, who saved tens of people at the cost of his life, stopping a terrorist at a railway station in Volgograd on December 29, was awarded posthumously with the Order of Valour, press secretary of the Volga River transport police department Svetlana Yanisova said. Makovkin’s funeral will be held on January 2.

Additional reserves of the law enforcement agencies were mobilized to patrol the streets in the city of Volgograd. More than 5,200 police officers and service members of the Interior Troops are involved in the security measures, official of emergency operations headquarters in Volgograd Region Andrey Pilipchuk said.

Hundreds of facilities were checked and a large amount of weapons was confiscated during a security sweep being held in the city of Volgograd after the terrorist attacks.

Security measures have been tightened at all life-supporting facilities. “The current situation is calm in the city in general,” he noted.

As many as 152 hotels, 104 dormitories, 32 bus terminals, 23 railway stations and terminals, the city airport and three river ports have been checked in the city. The search continues through the attics and basements, and 592 and 673 facilities, respectively, had been checked.

More than 4.7 kilograms of drugs, 152 pieces of rifle-bore and smoothbore weapons were confiscated during the security sweep, Pilipchuk said.

Ninety-one crimes have been reported in the city of Volgograd over the past day. Fifty-six crimes were solved immediately. 78 criminals were found involved in these crimes, including a person detained for illegal storage of weapons. More than 1,000 lawbreakers, who committed administrative offences, were exposed, the emergency operations headquarters noted.
