MOSCOW, December 26. /ITAR-TASS/. The Federation Council on Wednesday approved a federal law on the state automated information system ERA-GLONASS.

For the present, the Russian legislation does not define mechanisms to use satellite navigation technologies to ensure road traffic safety.

The law approved on Wednesday regulates relations in the creation and functioning of the system of urgent operation in emergencies with the use of the Russian global navigation satellite system. The system is used to immediately receive information about traffic accidents and send it to duty services, including police.

The operator of the ERA-GLONASS system will be a federal executive power structure. The operator may use other organizations in the work.

Information provided by the system will be used by emergency services and drivers of cars equipped with special devices to call emergency services.

The system is created at the federal budget expense. A sum of 3.9 billion rubles was allocated to finance it in 2010-2013, and 500 million rubles will be earmarked in 2014 for its maintenance.

The law will come into force in January 1, 2014.
