Prokhorov leaves post of Civic Platform party leader, but not quit politics
Irina Prokhorova was named to head the Civic Platform Party
MOSCOW, December 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Irina Prokhorova was named to head the Civic Platform Party, replacing her brother and Russian business tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov at the post.
The federal civil committee of the party has decided to introduce the annual rotation in the leadership of the Civic Platform Party at a behind-closed-doors meeting earlier on Friday. The decision has taken effect starting from Friday, December 20. Meanwhile, billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov remains the head of the federal political committee of the party.
“We have discussed the issue of rotation and as you know most regions have supported the rotation,” Prokhorov told reporters after a meeting of the Civic Platform federal civil committee. “Upon the results of debates and voting Irina Prokhorova was elected by a majority of votes as a new head of the federal civil committee of the party for a year,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Prokhorov noted that he “does not quit politics.”
“It is a very difficult and responsible decision for me to assume the post of the head of the Civic Platform federal civil committee. I am grateful to Mikhail, who believes that I can do it,” Irina Prokhorova stated.
Mikhail Prokhorov has put forth an initiative to conduct the full annual rotation in the governing bodies of the party in October. In his view, this measure makes the policy of the party less predictable for the incumbent Russian authorities. “We were too frank, but now we will be smarter and less predictable for the state authorities,” the Civic Platform leader stated. He added that the full rotation in the party’s leadership would permit to prevent it from turning in an autocratic party.
