Putin: Russia to develop hydropower in Far East

MOSCOW, December 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin confirmed the plans to develop the hydropower in the Far East.

“We shall develop the energy, hydropower in the Far East,” he told a big news conference on Thursday, while answering a question from a reporter from the Far East’s Khabarovsk.

However, the president said, building exclusively hydropower facilities in the region would not be sufficient, as the region requires “a complex, variable work” on its development. The president reiterated several provisions of his state-of-the-nation address of December 12, including those on new production facilities, beneficial taxing policies, and so forth. Implementation of those measures should “offer conditions for the promising development” of the Far East, Putin said.

On October 21, Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich ordered drafting a program of constructing hydropower facilities along the Amur River to regulate dropping of water in high-water seasons.
