The Russian-American program Megatons to Megawatts exist for more than 20 years

WASHINGTON, December 11. /ITAR-TASS/. The Russian-American program Megatons to Megawatts has paved the way for further bilateral cooperation in the nuclear industry sphere, head of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Sergei Kiriyenko said on Tuesday.

He admitted that over 20 years of the program implementation the sides “have faced technical, commercial and political problems, and if somebody wanted to find a pretext for the withdrawal from the project, it could be done.” However, he noted, “if there is the will to find a solution, it can be found in the most difficult situation.”

Kiriyenko said that the implementation of the program had shown that by joint efforts it is possible to fulfill tasks no matter how difficult they are. ‘It is the basis that allows our companies already after the completion of this project to discuss further cooperation options,” he added.

The Rosatom head noted that he had already discussed a number of such projects at talks on Tuesday with US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz.
