MOSCOW, November 15,  /ITAR-TASS/. Russian Orthodox Church welcomes a proposal by the Samara region legislators, who recommend a ban on the abortions, the costs of which are covered from the budget, the chairman of the Church’s information department, Vladimir Legoida, told reporters on Friday.

“We do not speak about the abortions made out of the considerations of medical necessity,” Legoida said.

“It does not also imply that a woman is deprived of the right to perform an abortion for her own money,” he said. “The primary consideration here is that the Russian tax payers, including Russian Orthodox believers, Muslims, Jews and other believers as well as non-believers for whom the abortion is quite unacceptable, will not share responsibility for the immoral act of taking away an unborn baby’s life with those who dare do it.”

Legoida proposed to “re-channel the money spared through a withholding of this morally unacceptable free medical service into treating the women who damaged their health because of this operation.”

“And public efforts should get a stronger backing in what concerns the disclosure of the negative spiritual and medical consequences of the act that deprives unborn children of their lives, as well as in the strengthening of family values, cementing of responsible parenthood relations and of large families,” the Church representative said.
