Bombs had TNT-equivalent of 100kg, official says

MOSCOW, October 25 (Itar-Tass) - The bombs that were found in the car of two gunmen, who were killed in Dagestan, were equivalent to 100 kg of TNT, a source at the National Antiterrorism Committee told Itar-Tass.

Two submachine guns, a pistol and four grenades were found in the car. The members of the so-called Khasavyurt gang, who were in the car, were neutralized on Khasavyurt's outskirts when they offered armed resistance. FSB sappers also deactivated a mortar round filled with shrapnel ready to be set off. One of the gunmen held it on his knees, the NAC source said.

There were also two large cans filled with explosive substance weighing a total of 100 kg of TNT also ready to be set off. Specialists believe the car was prepared to commit a terrorist attack.

All the explosives were destroyed at the site in an explosion.

The operation of law enforcement forces prevented a serious terrorist attack with many casualties, the NAC noted.

At 07:50 Moscow time on Friday, when police attempted to stop a car at a street near a traffic police post, those who were in the car opened fire at the cordon. One soldier of interior ministry troops was wounded. The gunmen in the car were neutralized. They were not immediately identified.

The operation was launched earlier in the area to check information about whereabouts of members of terrorist groups operating in Dagestan. The counter-terrorist operation regime was imposed in the Vinsovkhoz district in Khasavyurt.
