Philippines earthquake claimed over 140 lives

Over 300 injured; severe damage to property reported

TOKYO, October 16. (Itar-Tass) – At least 142 people died in Philippines after the 7.1 magnitude earthquake which shook southern part of the country Tuesday. Over 300 were injured.

The local police reported that 132 people died in the Bohol province alone. Siba and Siquijor provinces were affected as well. A total of 300 residential and administrative buildings were destroyed. Search and rescue operations are still underway. 

The 7.1 earthquake originated from 33 kilometers below the Bohol island; there was no threat of Tsunami. It was followed by a 5.9 earthquake later that day. Its epicenter was located in 20 kilometers below ocean floor near the South-West shore of the Bohol island.

Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to Benigno Aquino, President of the Philippines. “Please accept my deepest condolences regarding the numerous casualties and severe damage caused by the earthquake in the central part of the Philippines archipelago,” the telegram, authored by Putin and posted on the Kremlin’s website reads: “I would like to extend words of sympathy and support to family and close ones of the deceased and wishes of speedy recovery to the injured.”
